GARDENING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
There’s something special about preparing the soil, planting and eating your own vegetables or enjoying your own beautiful flower garden. Being outside in the fresh air working in the yard is also a wonderful way to exercise the body and calm the mind. Follow these simple tips to avoid turning your little piece of heaven into a source of stress. Start with a plan. Gardeners are always planning. A beginner gardener should take time to look at magazines and books showing garden designs and popular plants for the season. Use the books as a guide to ensure you know what you’re getting into. But remember they’re only guidelines. Colors can be mixed and matched in any combination to suit your taste. If you’re too enthusiastic with your garden plan, it can become overwhelming. And if you’re discouraged, it can become nothing but a headache not to mention an eventual mess of weeds. As a gardener, you’ll soon learn the true meaning of the phrase “you reap what you sow.” Consider the space you have to work with and the time you are willing to devote to your garden before you get started. A large garden sounds lovely but it will need daily weeding and require a lot of work. A small yard or patio can accommodate a manageable garden with herbs, flowers and some vegetables. Containers and planter boxes are ideal for small spaces. Start out small and experiment with perennials and shrubs then build up over the next year when you find what works best for you. Plants need sun, water and soil. Know the amount of sun and shade in your garden space and how much your plants will need. You can always move some plants around later if you make a mistake but it’s better to get it right the first time. Get to know what type of soil you have and prepare it before planting to ensure the best results. Fertilizer can be added before planting. Compost is an effective fertilizer and is easy to make from food scraps, leaves and other ingredients. Start composting a few months before you garden as it takes time for the ingredients to break down and be useful. Water your garden early in the morning or in the evening. In midday, the hot sun will evaporate the water faster than it has a chance to absorb into the ground. Gather your tools. You will need a few tools but you don’t have to spend a lot of money to start a small garden. The essential tools are a spade, cultivator, hoe, pruning shears, gloves, watering cans and a garden hose. When the garden is planned, the materials purchased and the ground ready, it’s time to plant and let your gardening adventure begin. The secret to a successful garden is patience. It will take some time but it will be well worth all your efforts.
